area. The city's seven local unions have a work force of from 6,000 to 7,000 full-time journeymen.
In the first half of 1968, a total of 2,074,000 man hours were worked. This year, the figure rose to 2,210,000 man hours worked from January 1st through June 30th.
"Since the last half of each year is usually more active than the first half, and we are already approximately 10% ahead of last year, we expect to top last year's figure by a substantial margin," Mr. Holme said.
Total man hours for the entire work force amounted to 4,600,000 man hours in 1968. Estimates for the second half of 1969 indicate that a total of some five million man hours could be reached by the end of the year.
In 1968, the average bricklayer increased his man hours by approximately 150 hours for a total of 750 hours worked according to Mr. Holme, who concluded that the second half will show a "similar improvement again this year."
"While we hear and read a lot about other materials, brick continues to be the basic building material used in the New York area," Mr. Holme said.
