SHULTZ MEETS WITH INDUSTRY
Secretary of Labor George P. Shultz on May 1 met in one of a continuing series of discussions with 30 leading representatives of national contractors associations and presidents of international building and construction trades unions to discuss disputes settlement problems and manpower and training programs in the construction industry.

The Secretary and Director J. Curtis Counts of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service reported to the group that more formal arrangements have been implemented by the Government to provide more effective assistance in the resolution of labor disputes affecting the construction industry.

The new program will provide closer liaison between the national offices of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the contractor associations and building trades unions.

Coordinators for the construction industry will be assigned by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and by the employer and union groups. In addition, special Federal mediators with construction industry background will be available to handle problem cases.

BEARING WALL STUDY
The economy of brick bearing wall construction is disclosed in a recent case study by the Structural Clay Products Institute.

Designed by DeVries & Associates, architects and engineers, the new 11-story Muskegon Retirement Apartments for the elderly at Muskegon, Mich., were built at a cost of $1,983,483, or $17.22 per sq. ft. This is $100,000 less than the original estimate. The architects attribute the saving to the 8-inch loadbearing cross walls that separate apartments and at the same time provide structural support.
