Phoenix Crowns New Champ

With a crowd of approximately 300 persons in attendance the Masonry Industry in Phoenix honored their bricklayer apprentices with a Banquet and Dinner Dance on May 9th at Sharp's Crest Room.

Named as Grand Champion Bricklayer Apprentice for 1970 was John Meskimen with the Lee Churchill Memorial Award being presented to David Lespron.

For first year apprentices the top three prizes went to Tim Freegard, Dixon Sumpter and John Sayre.

Michael Jones, Clyde Riggs and Robert Reece took the honors for second year apprentices.

For third year apprentices Ted Brannan was second, James Colter was third and Freddie Roberts was fourth.

Coordinator of the Phoenix program is Brooks Billings with Instructors Bernie Farnum and Lawrence Meskimen. Members of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee are: John Avechuco, Virgil Griner, Bart Del Duca, Jr. and Chet Freegard representing the Arizona Masonry Contractors Association. Representing Local #3 are Robert Haren, Jake George and Alex Maldonado.

Brooks Billings served as Toastmaster for the evening with Bart Del Duca, Jr., Chairman, JAC, giving the welcome. Featured speaker was George A. Miller, MCAA Executive Vice President.

Judging the apprentices were Buell Ray, Charles Lance and David Sholder.
