A semi-campus arrangement, with interior courtyards to give a feeling of natural openness while retaining a unity of structure, has been attractively designed into LaSalle High School of Milwaukie, Oregon. The parochial coeducational institution is owned and operated by the Christian Brothers and staffed jointly with the Sisters of Mary of Oregon.
Masonry units used on this project were 8" x 4" x 16" dry pressed brick. All exterior 8" walls were given a spray coat of silicone sealer upon completion of the masonry. Cost of the 94,650 square foot project came to $14.68 per square foot, exclusive of site development, architectural masonry fees, furnishings, and residence and chapel for the Brother teachers. The roof system is supported on steel columns on 14-foot centers to work with the masonry cell opening. The entire building was modulated on the 14-foot scale, which contributed much to the simplicity and low-cost construction plus rapidity of erection. Reinforcing was designed to comply with seismic zone 2 requirements.
Mason contractor Smallen cites this school as one of his finest masonry accomplishments. The architects credit him with an excellence of craftsmanship that has resulted in several other schools in the area designed and built using these same materials.
