The pleasing symmetry of huge curved blocks that seem to fit naturally into the surrounding rugged landscape makes an architectural gem of Green Gables Elementary School in Colorado's Jefferson County. A total of 267,000 Williamsburg Buckskin grain texture brick (tan to dark brown flash) were used in the entire project. Robinson Brick & Tile Company, a member of the Structural Clay Products Institute, supplied the brick and worked closely with the architect and mason contractor in utilizing the more than 50,000 specially shaped brick in nine different designs.
Architect Laramey used the combination of brick bearing walls and built-up roof to provide an economical building exterior requiring minimal maintenance. Many corridors and interior walls are of exposed brick with arched entrances leading from one area to another.
Mason Contractor Gage Behunin used an aluminum template on all curved walls. This method of construction not only assured speed and accuracy but cut down on level time.
