Court Upholds Tile Council in Patent Case

The Tile Council of America announced that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (California) has upheld the decision of a lower court, affirming the validity and infringement of two patents owned by the Tile Council in its suit against Ceramic Tilers Supply, Inc. of Los Angeles.

The decision by the Court of Appeals, validating two Tile Council patents for Dry-Set mortar and grout, culminates more than nine years of litigation. The initial patent infringement action was filed by the Tile Council against Ceramic Tilers in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in February, 1962.

Ronald S. Leafblad has been appointed president of White Construction Equipment, Northfield, III., division of White Motor Corp. He moves up from marketing manager. The Prime-Mover Co., Muscatine, Iowa, has announced the appointment of J. A. "Jack" Shulin as southeastern district representative, based in Atlanta.

The appointments of Herbert Batchelor as traffic manager and Donald C. Gustafson as assistant traffic manager have been announced by Marblehead Lime Co., Chicago. Batchelor succeeds P. Donald Jones, who has elected to take early retirement after 20 years of service with the company.

New D.C. Masonry Institute Award

Schifko Appointed to Michigan Masonry Post

SCHIFKO

Ronald F. Schifko has been appointed by the Masonry Institute of Michigan to take over the newly created post of industry coordinator, G. (Joe) Forte, president of the Institute, announced in Detroit. In his new position, Schifko will plan and develop promotional and educational programs designed to unify the various segments of the masonry industry.

According to Forte, he brings to the Institute a broad background of masonry-related promotional, technical and managerial experience necessary for filling the growing needs of the industry. Until assuming his new post, Schifko was employed by the Huron Cement Division of National Gypsum Co. for the last six years where he served as district sales manager in Minneapolis. Before that, he served as masonry sales representative in Huron's Detroit market.

A resident of Livonia, Mich., Schifko attended the Lawrence Institute of Technology and later served two years with the U.S. Army.

Omark Operation Moves

The Construction Tools Division of Omark Industries is transferring its Worcester (Mass.) manufacturing operation to Portland, Ore., effective May 1.

John L. Warne, group manager, said products of diamond-edged construction blades and core bits will be carried out at a new plant, now under construction near Portland. He said the move will place all the division's manufacturing in the U.S. under one roof.

Omark makes a wide range of fasteners, powder-actuated tools and loads, diamond blades and welders for the construction industry.

The D.C. Masonry Institute has presented its first "Masonry Excellence Award" to Bobbie N. Ellis, masonry foreman for N. Litterio & Co., Inc., Alexandria, Va., in recognition of the outstanding workmanship displayed in the construction of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Bailey's Crossroads, Va.

"Honorable Mention" awards were made to Robert Abell of Gordon H. Ragan, Inc., masonry contractor from Leonardtown, Md., whose excellent workmanship was evident in the C. & P. Telephone Company's Dial Center in La Plata, Md. Another "Honorable Mention" award was made to Raymond Stang of A. Myron Cowell, Inc. of Silver Spring, Md., for the attention to detail work on the Hoover Building in Rockville, Md.

The awards were presented at the Quarterly General Membership Dinner Meeting held at the Sheraton-Silver Spring Motor Inn in March. Purpose of the "Masonry Excellence Award" is to give recognition to the man-on-the-wall, or bricklayer, for the purpose of maintaining high standards of workmanship.

A new company -Amspec Inc.- has been created to market products directly to architects, engineers and others engaged in specifying materials in the construction industry. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it will begin business as the exclusive national distributor for construction products manufactured by Dow Chemical Company.

These include Styrofoam, Thurane and Dorvon brands plastic foam; Deraspan brand insulating panels and room liners; Dow Ceramic Foam, Threadline brand adhesive mortar, Sarabond brand mortar additive, and Dow's mastic adhesives. Amspec will
