Suppliers to Merge

W.S. Merriman, chairman of Marion Brick Corp., Marion, Ohio, and Robert W. Fort, president of Medusa Portland Cement Co., Cleveland, announced that their companies have agreed in principal to the acquisition of Marion Brick by Medusa for approximately 200,000 shares of Medusa common stock, having a market value of approximately $7,200,000 or $20 per Marion share. Marion operates six brick plants in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana with a total production capacity of 170,000,000 brick annually.

The proposed merger is subject to approval by the stockholders of Marion Brick Corp. The boards of directors of both companies have approved the transaction.

Safety Poses Problems for Asbestos Industry

The Emergency Standard for Exposure to Asbestos Dust, published in December by the U.S. Department of Labor, will produce great changes in the asbestos industry, according to Arthur R. Adams, president of Personal Environment Systems, Glendale, Calif.

The new, stricter standards, invoked under emergency provisions of the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, apply to all employees who are exposed to asbestos, whether it be in the areas of mining, refining, fabricating, construction or manufacturing. The emergency standard requires employers to be aware of the amount of asbestos concentration in which their employees must work and, depending on that amount, take certain specified protective measures.

While the new emergency standard is in force for six months, government officials have hinted that it will probably be a permanent part of the law, and that asbestos is just the first of many industries which will come under tougher safety and health regulations in the coming months.
