building interior. A pale green fibrous glass insert between the halves of the block eliminates extreme glare and solar heat gain. Each window was given an attractive pattern by use of a combination of 8" x 8", 4" x 12", and 12" x 12" blocks.
Controlling the air supply that is so important in a print shop are five 3-ton self-contained window air conditioning units per floor. The units are window installed. Mechanical humidifiers help to maintain proper air moisture content in the press room. Because of the good insulation properties of glass blocks, the load on air conditioners last summer was reduced by about 15 percent. The insulation factor of glass block equals that of a 12"-thick masonry block wall. This is about three times that of a single-glazed conventional window.
Oliver Kendall, who has researched the characteristics of glass block, expects that the blocks will show no moisture condensation at winter temperatures well below zero. This is not true of single-glazed windows.
Portland Launches Pilot Pre-Training Program
The Portland (Ore.) Mason's Trade Apprenticeship & Training Committee on May 8 launched its first Pre-Apprenticeship Bricklayers Program at Mt. Hood Community College with 15 candidates.
Funded by the Manpower Development & Training Act under contract with the Joint Apprenticeship Committee comprised of bricklayer union and mason contractor representatives, Portland is one of 33 cities in the nation selected for the program. The funding covers instructors' fees, tools, equipment and all necessary materials for the six-week course in pre-job bricklaying.
"Purpose of this program," said Bill Smith, Joint Apprenticeship Trade Committee chairman, "is to train these men so they will be of immediate benefit to the contractor before entering the regular apprenticeship three-year training period."
