Colorado Holds 4th Annual Conference

About 200 bricklayers attended the 10-hour course in first aid conducted by John Kelley, training center supervisor, U.S. Bureau of Mines in Denver. The new OSHA law requires a crew to have a member qualified in first aid. Because of the 10-hour length, the course required two Saturday sessions.

The ladies' program was attended by more than 60 wives and friends of CMCA members. The women were treated to a demonstration on candle-making at Heritage Square.

The day-long conference was climaxed by a luncheon that included two award presentations. The association first honored three of its past members-Walt Rothermel, longtime CMCA president, now retired; Johnny Middel, who now owns and operates a mobile home park in Ft. Collins, and Dale Vaughn, presently employed by Valley Block Co. in Ft. Collins. Each received honorary membership in CMCA.

The Bricklayers Union Local #1 of Denver then chose the conference as a proper place and time to present its second annual Bricklayer of the Year award. The recipient was Billy White, a member of Local #1 for 20 years and supervisor on various masonry jobs in the metropolitan area. David "Okie" Wilson, business agent for Local #1, presented the award.

The conference ended after a tour through the new facilities of Denver Brick & Pipe Co., whose plant is considered among the most modern in the nation. Catered refreshments were served to the touring group by the company.
