The first masonry promotion effort by the newly created Minnesota Masonry Institute attracted 4,500 visitors at the recent Union Industries' Show in Minneapolis. The show was a joint effort of Minnesota BM & PIU locals, the apprenticeship committee, building material dealers and the Minnesota Masonry Institute.

"It was a thoroughly successful, high-traffic display for the masonry industry," commented Tom Richardson, executive director of the institute. "More than 4,500 people registered at our booth and thousands more stopped to view bricklaying demonstrations. Young spectators expressed interest in the apprenticeship program and were given enrollment information."

Apprentice bricklayers Mark Mosman and Dave Heggestuen, under the guidance of instructor Vern Johnson of the Hennepin Technical Center, demonstrated column and arch building. Ken Johnson, president of the Minnesota Conference of Bricklayers, was booth coordinator.

Both Richardson and Johnson expressed pleasure at the show's success and planned to consider similar co-operative promotional efforts. Among their considerations is participation in the upcoming state fair and selected professional conventions scheduled for the Twin Cities.

Shown here are Peter Nasvik and Eberhard Bulach of E.L. Bulach Construction Co., West St. Paul, putting the finishing touches on the bominite patio while West St. Paul Mayor Ed Meisinger and Councilman Tom Stassen watch with interest. The demonstration, which will be held in a different community each year, consisted of the building of a fireplace and three patios, each with a different type of concrete finish.
