Masonry Enclosure for Liberty Bell

A replica of the famous Liberty Bell that once hung in Independence Hall in Philadelphia now has a permanent resting place at 14th & Sherman Sts. in Denver on the State Capitol grounds. The historic bell and its all-masonry enclosure were formally dedicated on August 29 by Governor John Wanderhoof in a ceremony climaxing the "Build America" program which started on July 4th as a joint venture between construction labor and management.

The enclosure building, a donation to the state of Colorado, was made possible through the cooperation of management and labor with the supporting help of many suppliers who donated materials. The architectural design called for all-masonry construction, and members of the Colorado Mason Contractors Association stepped in to carry their share of the load. Associate members and their contributions were: Brick Institute of America (brick and pavers); Francis J. Fisher (cement and lime); Lester Jones Co. (sand); Waco Co. (scaffolding), and Rent-It Center (portable equipment). The masonry labor was donated by Steve Dach (CMCA).

A previously untold story is quietly referred to on the plaque which was attached to one of the piers of the enclosure. It reads: The masonry labor for this memorial is donated by Stephen Dach in loving memory of his father Alfred who perished in the early years of World War II in a Nazi concentration camp. May this be a reminder of him and all those others who have perished in the fight for liberty and freedom which this Liberty Bell represents. August 29, 1974.

Steve Dach, mason contractor for the Liberty Bell enclosure, is shown alongside the replica of the Bell shortly after it was moved from its temporary home in the State Capitol building to is permanent place within the new all-masonry structure. The masonry portion of the work was donated by Dach Masonry Co. (MCAA).

I'M HELPING BUILD AMERICA AND PROUD OF IT! A COOPERATIVE VENTURE OF CONSTRUCTION LABOR AND MANAGEMENT

The roof, prefabricated on the ground, is lifted into place by a crane for the Liberty Bell enclosure. The crane was donated by Frohlick Crane Service Co. as were the labor and many of the materials used to build the structure.

Representatives of the masonry industry present on the platform during dedication ceremonies for the Liberty Bell enclosure were (from left): John Long, president, Colorado Mason Contractors Association; Governor Vanderhoof of Colorado; Steve Dach, representing the Colorado Masonry Institute, and Dan Berich, chairman of the Masonry Advancement Program. They represented the three masonry organizations which joined with other associations and unions to make the "Build America" program a success.
