The J.C. Penney Company Store, Lincoln Mall, Matteson, Ill., winner of an "Excellence In Masonry" award from the Chicago Masonry Council. The specially chosen tri-fluted block covering this two-story retail outlet presents an ever-changing visual interest when sunlight plays on the irregular surfaces. The judges noted that, in an area of architectural design usually characterized by banality, the facades of this building stand out as an "excellent example of simple materials suitably and boldly massed to good effect." O'BRYANT SQUARE

Portland, Oregon
Architects: Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall, AIA

O'Bryant Square and the Fountain For A Rose are providing a beautiful addition to Portland's downtown park system. The area was developed primarily as a "people place," a relaxing spot where workers and shoppers could enjoy their lunch periods. Shrubbery and roses give the park an atmosphere of natural beauty.

A city block square, the area features special brown-tone paving brick that present a pleasing diversion from the typical concrete sidewalks. During the summer months the park bureau provides entertainment and various other activities, such as the Rose Festival.

Donald Edmundson of the architectural firm traveled to several major cities nationally to inspire the design thought.

Viewed from the architects' office, O'Bryant Square provides a rustic, relaxing setting in the otherwise busy financial section of Portland. Focal point is the Fountain For A Rose, whose gushing water flows over the sloping bronze surfaces forming a pattern resembling rose petals.
