Masonry vs. Glass Office Building
(Continued from page 10)

Insulating reflective glass walls are about 30% more expensive than tinted glass walls and nearly 85% more expensive than conventional brick masonry walls constructed in place. The insulating reflective glass is more efficient in conserving energy than the tinted glass walls, but, as noted above, even this optimum performance glass wall uses about 2½ times as much energy as brick masonry walls.

The foundation costs and structural framing costs attributable to brick masonry walls are greater than for glass walls. (However, the brick building is still less expensive to build than the glass building, saving $848,735 in initial building cost and $1,040.549 in total development and building costs in the study.)

The higher initial cost attributable to glass walls produces higher development costs, especially for construction financing.

Rental rates are typically not increased by greater window area.
