Your Biggest Asset: Accounts Receivable
A slow-pay account may be preferable to a no-pay account-but both are losers. Account receivables may represent the vital source of income, says William H. Bassett, Jr., president of the National Association of Credit Management, but "time is money" and they can also represent a significant loss if not collected promptly.

For example, a current account dollar decreases to $.90 when overdue three months, $.67 after six months, $.45 in one year, $.23 in two, $.15 in three, and $.04 when overdue for five years.

So, if a company's net profit is 3%, for every credit loss of $100, it has to increase sales by another $3,334 just to stay open.

And, in today's market, an account that is 60 days behind in payment is getting the equivalent of a 12% discount.
