Economist Sees Better 1976
Cement consumption in the United States in 1976 will increase about 7.5% over 1975 levels, according to Thomas O'Connor, manager of economic research for the Portland Cement Association. He predicted that domestic shipments will rise to about 72 million tons this year compared with 1975's volume of 67 million tons.
O'Connor said he based his projection on the expectation that housing starts will be between 1.5 million and 1.6 million and that industrial-commercial construction awards will increase slightly more than 10% over 1975. Public building construction is expected to be down marginally and nonbuilding awards will fall about 7% from 1975, he forecast.
