New Style Fireplace Damper

A new type of fireplace flue damper, one that is installed outdoors on top of the chimney, relies upon a silicone RTV adhesive/sealant to hold it in place throughout a lifetime of exposure to weather and extremes of heat and cold.

Developed and patented by B. С. Lyemance, Louisville, Kentucky, the new damper reportedly seals out rain, birds, and insects, reduces heat loss, provides greater reliability than conventional dampers, and saves time and money in chimney construction, according to it's developers. DeLuxe FEATURES at Standard Prices.

The damper may be installed in new chimneys, or used to renovate existing chimneys having conventional dampers. The damper is being marketed to contractors. Three sizes cover standard terra cotta flue tiles from 9 x 13 inches, 13 x 13 inches, and 13 x 18 inches.

"Because the damper is located at the top of the flue, a brick-layer can build a safer, more fire-proof chimney-and build it quicker. Absence of a conventional damper also eliminates a known hot spot because the former damper location can be more thoroughly insulated with brick," Lyemance, who was a masonry contractor for 30 years, mentioned.

The lid of the new damper is spring-loaded in the normally-open position. It is shut by means of a stainless-steel cable that extends down the flue to the fire-box, where it is secured to a bracket mortared into a forward part of the fireplace wall. Being normally open, the damper cannot accidentally fall shut to cause a safety hazard when a fire is burning.

To bond the damper to the flue tile, Lyemance includes a 3 oz. tube of Silastic Gasket RTV silicone rubber with every unit shipped. The black, paste-like adhesive/sealant from Dow Corning Corporation, Midland, MI, seals the interface between the damper After the stainless steel control cable has been dropped down the flue, the damper is laid on of the tile and pressed down snugly.

and flue tile and prevents the damper from sliding around or inadvertently being removed by high winds when the lid is in the open position and cable tension is relaxed.

To provide a superior quality product, the new damper has been subjected to a battery of performance evaluations by an independent testing laboratory and and extensively field tested by Lyemance International. The top seal damper is approved for use in FHA Homes.
