NEW YORK'S BEST AWARDS
The "New York's Best" Awards of the Metropolitan Masonry Council, honoring "the building of outstanding architectural distinction completed in New York last year", were presented on March 2 to the talented team who created Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in Bronx, N.Y.

Seated (left to right) are: J. Lawrence Murphy, executive director of the Facilities Development Corp., Max O. Urbahn, FAIA, architect: and Walter B. Shaw, president of Turner Construction Company. Standing (left to right) are: Arthur Del Savio, president of D & F Masons, Inc. Anthony J. Zotallo, president of the Metropolitan Brick Masonry Council.

Anthony J Zotollo, president of the masonry group, presented the awards to the four companies whose combined efforts resulted in Lincoln Hospital's distinctive appearance: Max Urbahn Associates, the project architect; Turner Construction Co.; D & F Masons; and New York State Facilities Development Corp. The awards honored the "excellent concept and imaginative design" of the hospital. Among its many innovations is an 18 foot high "wall of motion", designed by noted architectural artist Alexandra Kasuba and executed in a curved design of bricks set to simulate waves. It is believed this is the first time the dramatic effect of three dimensional brick sculpture has been created as an inherent part of a structural wall. Mr. Zotollo also paid tribute to the "fast track phasing construction" method used by Turner. This system is credited with trimming 14 months off the time required to build the $100 million plus Lincoln Hospital, a 900 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and with extensive research and outpatient-emergency facilities, covering over 1,700,000 square feet on a 9 acre site. This technique allows design and construction to proceed concurrently instead of in sequence, the traditional approach.
