IMI ENGINEERING EDUCATION
ADVISORY COUNCIL APPOINTED
As part of a long-range program to get masonry back into schools of engineering in the United States and Canada, the International Masonry Institute (IMI) has appointed a four-man Engineering Education Advisory Council. This Council augments the four-man Architectural Education Advisory Council which has been functioning during the past year.
Appointed to the Engineering Council are the following deans of colleges of engineering: Dale A. Carlson, University of Washington; D. C. Drucker, University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana; William M. Sangster, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Dr. W. A. McLaughlin, dean, Faculty of Engineering, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
The first meeting of the newly appointed Council was on June 9 at the International Club in Washington, D.C., it was announced by IMI Chairman Charles F. Velardo. In addition to the four deans, the following IMI, BAC and MCAA officials participated:
IMI secretary-treasurer George A. Miller, executive vice president, Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA); IMI advisor John Joyce, secretary, International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen (BAC); IMI advisor L. G. Carlisle, director of the BAC Department of Collective Bargaining & Research: IMI executive director Neal English: IMI director of masonry engineering Buck Richardson, and IMI public relations/advertising account executive Ray Lackey, senior vice president, Henry Kaufman & Associates.
A review was made of IMI's development, current programs and goals as the masonry industry's resource center and promotional arm. The new thrust in the development of educational materials for schools of architecture and engineering was also reviewed.
The day-long discussion then focused on specific recommendations and ideas of the deans as to how IMI might most effectively take action and produce materials helpful to engineering students, and to serve as a continuing education resource for practicing professional engineers. A fall meeting is planned at which time it is felt that a program can be outlined for submission to the IMI Board for consideration as a 1978 project.
The previously formed Architectural Education Advisory Council is composed of Hugh Burgess, dean, College of Architecture, Arizona State University; E. Fay Jones, chairman, Department of Architecture, University of Arkansas: Patrick Quinn, dean, Department of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, N.Y., and Ambrose M. Richardson, chairman, Department of Architecture, University of Notre Dame.
