Col. James B. Irwin, Apollo 15 Astronaut
Col. Irwin's accomplishments in space have been chronicled the world over. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he was commissioned in the Air Force and became a test pilot. In 1966 he was selected by NASA as an astronaut, and served as lunar space module pilot on the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. This, the fourth manned lunar landing, was distinguished by the first use of the lunar rover vehicle and the exploration of Hadley Rille and the Apennine Mountains of the moon. Now retired from the Air Force, Col. Irwin is Board Chairman of the High Flight Foundation, an organization he established in 1972 to share his faith and serve his fellow man. With his wife, Mary, and their five children, Col. Irwin resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
