Trowels From Around the World

This picture of trowels from around the world has been provided by William F. Roark, director of manpower development for the Brick Institute of America. "Most countries have different methods of laying brick and therefore use different tools," explains Roark. "The Americans, Irish and English use the same shape (see trowel at lower right), and their bricklaying method is about the same."

The trowel directly above the American version is used in France, Germany and Switzerland. The remaining four, beginning at the lower left, are used in Iran, China, Korea and Holland.
