Makers See Gains in '80

Construction machinery manufacturers expect to end 1979 in the plus column, with total shipments of machines to U.S., Canadian and overseas customers running slightly ahead of 1978 business volume. They also look to 1980 business to show marginal increases over 1979 business.

But the anticipated modest growth of the industry could suddenly change for the worse, say the manufacturers, depending on abrupt changes in the political and economic picture.

These predictions are contained in the "Outlook '80" report, a survey of current and expected industry trends conducted by the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association.


Elect Costella Head

of Detroit MCA for '80

Francis Costella, president of Monte Costella & Co., Southfield, Mich., has been elected 1980 president of the Detroit Mason Contractors Association. Other officers at the association's recent annual meeting were: Vice president, Howard Hicks, Ebeling & Hicks, Inc., Romeo; secretary, Frank Soave, Cavanaugh & Soave, Inc., Troy, and treasurer, Ray Baker, Baker Construction Co., Inc., Ann Arbor.

James C. Wyatt, executive director of the Detroit MCA, said that the association's 1980 activities would focus on its 30th anniversary, being celebrated this year.

Ten architects began their terms of office on January 1, 1980, following their election as national officers of the Society of Registered Architects (SARA).

They are: Richard Shields, York, Pa., president, Robert Johnson, Glenview, III., president-elect; Sidney Epstein, Chicago, III., vice president; Arnold Schaffner, Chicago, recorder; Fred Prather, Chicago, treasurer: Alex A. Gravesen, Redington Shore, Fla., regent-at-large, and Chester Stark, Glenview, III., archivist.

Donald Mckercher, North Palm Beach, Fla., Bertrand Johnson, Plainfield, N.J., and Wayne Bryan, Chicago, were elected directors of the society.
