Byzantine Design Selected for Greek Orthodox Church in East

Authentic Byzantine architecture, which was developed and popularized in eastern Europe between the 4th and 15th centuries, will grace the new St. John's Greek Orthodox Church being constructed in Blue Point, Suffolk County, N.Y.

Designed by Steven P. Papadatos, AIA, New York City, the exterior finishes of the building are derived from schemes and details of the church of The Theotokos in Osios Loukas monastery. Deep brick bands casting shade and shadow upon each other will recreate the authentic Byzantine masonry details.

Stucco will be utilized as the wall finish, similar to the architectural finishes of the churches of Mount Athos and St. Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul). The exterior of these churches were plastered with stucco to cover the joints of the masonry masses. The entire roof will be covered with Byzantine clay tile.

"Architecturally speaking, the interior of the church is more than just four masonry walls enclosing a space," said Papadatos. "It is a spiritualizing enclosure with four main columns supporting the center dome, representing the infinity of the heavens within the structure."

On the exterior, the dome, an octagon shape with pierced windows, will tower some 50 feet above ground level.
