Nation's Largest Cement Producer
Enters Largest Masonry Market
With the start of masonry work at the George W. Collins Apartments on Chicago's near west side, Lone Star Industries, the nation's largest manufacturer of cement, recently entered the Chicago masonry market-also the nation's largest.
The mason contractor for the 138,304 sq. ft. structure is Hirsekorn Construction Co., Inc., Naperville, III. Crane Construction Co., Northbrook, III., is the general contractor.
The masonry wall bearing structure was designed by Chicago Associates Planners & Architects, with structural engineering by Klein & Hoffman, Inc., Chicago.
The superstructure required the use of 160,000 utility size brick and 120,000 concrete block. It was completed in 17 weeks due to the efficient use of wall bearing masonry and precast concrete deck. Ross Block of Romeoville, III., supplied the special 3,000 psi lightweight concrete masonry units for the project.

2. Prior to its issue, BIA agreed to circulate to the interested parties the copy for the revised Technical Notes 28B for their comment. This was done.
3. BIA agreed to furnish to the Metal Lath/Steel Framing Association 500 copies of the revised Technical Notes 28B for distribution at their convention. This was done also.
4. BIA and the other associations agreed to try to formulate a cooperative research and testing project in order to develop hard numbers on the performance of the brick veneer/steel stud wall system.
All of the foregoing has been accomplished or is underway. Technical Notes 28B Revised. "Brick Veneer-Panel and Curtain Walls." February, 1980, is in circulation and is included in this issue of Masonry. The technology contained in Technical Notes 28B Revised is the same as that in the early issue. The research project is still in the planning stage.
All of the above actions have been taken in the interest of inter-industry harmony, consistent with meeting our responsibilities to the brick industry.
