'80 MCAA CONFERENCE REPORT
Dallas, Texas, February 20-27
Big D did it again! Actually, it was two Big D's- Dallas, Texas, and '80 MCAA Conference chairman Dee Brown-who teamed up to produce one of the more memorable MCAA annual gatherings. While other regions of the nation were recovering from disastrous floods and swirling snowstorms, Dallas provided near-perfect 70-degree weather that was essential to MCAA's outdoor Masonry Industry Showcase as well as sightseeing activities. Dee Brown made a valuable contribution by arranging a program of outstanding speakers. This winning combination was instrumental in making the '80 MCAA International Masonry Conference and Educational Trade Show a long-to-be-remembered, resounding success.
The unusually large attendance-one of the biggest in the Association's history-was due in part to the significance of the occasion. It marked MCAA's 30th year of service to the masonry industry and the responsible mason contractor. Old-timers were quick to remind newcomers to the Association of the noteworthy strides that the Association has made since its first formal meeting at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, in 1950. At that time only a handful of midwestern states were represented at the one-day meeting. In Dallas this year, the Conference, which ran a full week, from February 20-27 at the stunning new Loews Anatole Hotel, attracted delegates from as far away as Hawaii and Canada. In all, 32 states and six Canadian provinces were represented.
As has been the recent custom, the '80 Conference was preceded by a two-day MCAA Management Institute presented by the MCAA Education Committee, Carl Schiesser, Glenwood Springs, Colo., chairman. The featured lecturers were Denver attorney Robert A. Esperti and CPA Dennis W. Bersch of Milwaukee, who explored the important areas of taxation and estate disbursement and advised mason contractors on how to better manage their day-to-day business operations with an aim toward bigger profits.
The sessions, which were conducted February 20 and 21, concentrated on the closely-held corporation and the family-owned business. More than 100 mason contractors and their wives attended the family-oriented discussions. Many of the wives commented afterward that the lectures, which were punctuated with questions and answers, were indeed valuable and provided them with keener insight into the financial and planning aspects of their husbands' mason contracting operations.
Friday, February 22, was devoted totally to Association business. The entire morning was taken up with meetings of MCAA's 10 operating committees the work-horse groups of the Association-plus an Industry Promotion Directors conference and a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association. The committees that convened were Contract Research, Education, Manpower, Material Handling, Safety, Constitution and Bylaws. Finance, Insurance, Masonry Panel Contractors, and Membership.
