About Our Cover
Baptist Memorial Hospital-East's location in suburban Memphis, Tenn., gives only a clue to the emphasis it places on a home-like recovery atmosphere. Surrounded by upper-middle class neighborhoods, the $30 million-dollar, 400-bed general care facility opened in 1979 to serve the increasing suburban population. From the exterior, the building mass and scale are substantially reduced by restricting the portion visible at any given place to less than half the total building mass. The smaller mass humanizes the approach to the hospital.

Owner satisfaction with masonry as an exterior material at the base hospital led to its employment at the satellite hospital. Limestone proved to wear well, required low maintenance and allowed for ease of installation. The new building's straightforward limestone exterior reflects the quality which is essential to the image of a hospital and relates well to its residential environs.

The architect for the project was Walk Jones & Francis Mah, Inc., with Huber Hunt & Nichols, Inc. the general contractor and Everett Cook & Sons, Inc. the mason contractor.
