New England Concrete Block Design Awards

Two New England architectural firms have received awards for excellence in concrete masonry design from the New England Concrete Masonry Association.

The firm of CBT/Childs Bertman Tseckares & Casendino, Inc., Boston, Mass. was honored for "The Belmont," a condominium complex in West Harwich, Mass.

Matthews, Ahlstrom, Connell of New Haven, Conn., was recognized for a project called "Park Ridge," an elderly housing project in New Haven.

Both designs required unique styles and colors of block for the structures, which are of loadbearing masonry construction.


Large Turnout for Arkansas A/E Seminar

One-hundred thirty-three registrants, including 79 architects, 26 engineers and 28 industry representatives throughout the state of Arkansas, participated in the recent A/E seminar sponsored by the Arkansas Masonry Development Trust at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock.

The lecturers consisted of Robert J. Beiner, director of engineering, International Masonry Institute, Washington. D.C.; John C. Grogan, Region 9 Director, Brick Institute of America, Atlanta, Ga., and Louis W. Gleekman, Ph.D., president, Materials & Corrosion Engineering Services, Southfield, Mich.

Beiner's presentation centered on design considerations involving the location and use of control joints, expansion joints, shear wall design considerations, and anchors and ties.

Grogan gave a slide presentation covering wall types and methods of bonding. Dr. Gleekman described conditions and factors leading to corrosion of anchors and ties within wall systems, particularly those using metal studs with brick veneer.
