What's in a Word?

The class of eight-year-olds was asked to write a short paragraph on firemen or policemen. When checking the papers, the teacher came across one entry that both puzzled and amused her. One youngster had ended her paragraph saying, "The brave young fireman came down the ladder pregnant."

Calling the girl to her desk, the teacher asked, "Christine, do you know what 'pregnant' means?"

"Yes, Miss Jones," replied Christine. "It means carrying a baby."

Saved by a Whisker

A little girl, riding in a bus, held a carton on her lap. "Mommy," she said. "I don't know if I should call my kitten Sally or Sam. Is it a boy or a girl?"

"You can call him Sam," said her mother. "But how can you tell?" persisted the little girl.

The mother saw the bus passengers holding their breaths in anticipation, then calmly explained: "He has whiskers, dear."
