Masonry Square Planned for Portland
The Masonry and Ceramic Tile Institutes of Oregon are actively engaged in promoting the sale of brick pavers for construction of Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. The effort is in conjunction with the Friends of Pioneer Square fundraising committee, which recently kicked off a brick-selling program to raise $1.6 million needed to build a complete square at S.W. 6th Avenue and Morrison Street.
The square is a proposed public gathering place designed by Portland architect Will Martin and will contain 300,000 paver brick. For a $15 donation, people can buy a brick imprinted with their name to be built into the square. Pictured are masonry craftsmen from Bricklayers Local #1 who constructed a 16' x 16' sample area on the construction site. The labor and materials were donated, and a brick sales booth was set up adjacent to the sample.
Bank of America Builds with Block
The Irvine Industrial Branch of the Bank of America recently relocated to a new 21,500 sq. ft. facility at 4101 MacArthur Blvd. in Newport Beach, Calif. Completed by The Koll Company, general contractor, the $1.3 million single-story structure is constructed of gray sandblasted concrete masonry block with black parapet trim. Primary glass exposures are positioned to the north with a small ribbon of glass extending around the curved south side of the building as part of the energy-efficient design.
