Masonry Foundation Advisory Council Evaluates

New Research Proposals

The Advisory Council to the Masonry Research Foundation, a non-profit corporation supported by all elements of the $5 billion per year masonry industry, met in mid- June to evaluate a second round of research proposals.

MCAA is a founder of the Foundation and was represented at the meeting by George A. Miller, MCAA executive vice president. The meeting took place at the Indian Lakes Resort and Conference Center near Chicago and was attended by Advisory Council members as well as board members of the Foundation's founding organizations. The Foundation board had met earlier in the week to analyze problems facing the masonry industry and to seek programmatic solutions.

Founded two years ago, the Masonry Research Foundation seeks to encourage and support needed research in the masonry field. The 25-member Advisory Council, consisting of academicians, building designers and public officials, aids the Foundation by helping to assess priority research needs and evaluating the proposals and work that flow from them. The Advisory Council chairman is William E. Sangster, dean of engineering at Georgia Tech.

At the Chicago meeting, the Council evaluated research proposals in the area of tensile bond, thermal design, and a masonry research index. Its recommendations will now go to the Foundation board for action.
