The winners were selected from 49 entries submitted by Michigan architects. Judging was by a jury of Milwaukee-area architects, all Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.
For Rossen/Neumann Associates, the awards were the firm's fourth and fifth in the seven years of this program. The 1981 "M Awards" were the third for TMP Associates and the second for Harley Ellington Pierce Yee Associates. The other three firms were making their first appearances in the winner's circle.
The cast-bronze "M Award" plaques also were presented to the building owners and to the Masonry Institute-member mason contractors involved in the winning projects.
Awards for Mason Contractors
Mason contractors cited were Baker Construction Co., Inc., Ann Arbor, for the Gerald R. Ford Library; C.S.W. Construction Co., Harper Woods, for the Bloomfield Office Center: Monte Costella & Co., Southfield, for 710 North Woodward; Hazewinkel Brothers, Inc., Grand Rapids, for The Furniture Company: Richard Modigell Masonry, Ann Arbor, for the St. Joseph Hospital project, and Robovitsky Construction, Inc., Clawson, for the Northern High School addition.
Jury members were Richard Blake, FAIA, Blake-Huettenrauch Associates, Inc., Milwaukee; George Schuett, FAIA, Schuett-Erdman Associates, Milwaukee, and John Jacoby. FAIA, Menomonee Falls, Wis.
Schuett, the jury chairman, announced the awards which were presented by Frank Soave, president of the Masonry Institute, and Michael Callahan, AIA, president of the Michigan Society of Architects.
710 North Woodward is a two-story office building that replaced the oldest brick residence in Oakland County. The design problem was to make the building blend in with the character of the local residential area, while at the same time providing an attractive exterior with contemporary detailing to compete with other modern business buildings on Woodward Avenue. The solution, according to Peter Tarupata, FAIA, chairman of the architectural firm, "was to use brick creatively in order to provide rovide visual impact. The warm, earth tones of the brick complement the surrounding landscape and accent the building's modified traditional form." The building utilizes an energy-efficient cavity wall system, with insulation and concrete masonry units backing up the exterior brick. The exterior brick detailing includes angled walls, curved walls, slotted chimneys, and exterior courtyards that feature brick walls, brick steps and brick pavers. The building, located north of Charing Cross ross Road in Bloomfield Hills, provides 25,000 sq. ft. of space. It was completed in 1980 at a cost of $1.4 million. Jury comments: "This building utilizes traditional architectural forms in a contemporary solution. Clean detailing and flat simple planes of brick masonry give the building an element of time lessness in its design.... a straightforward and dignified approach."
