'82 MCAA CONFERENCE REPORT
Orlando, Florida, February 13-17
MCAA members once again demonstrated their dedication to their Association in a big way. Despite the depressed economy, tight money and business down-time, they turned out in unusually large numbers to attend MCAA's 32nd International Masonry Conference and Educational Trade Show at the Hyatt Orlando Hotel in Kissimmee (Orlando), Florida, February 12-17.
And they weren't disappointed, as their enthusiasm and support made the '82 Conference one of the most successful in recent memory. They were treated to pleasant, balmy weather (daytime temperatures hovered in the middle to high 70s) and an outstanding slate of knowledgeable speakers who provided further insight into the state-of-the-art of the industry and the nation's present economic climate. They came to learn and to relax, and they received an abundance of both.
In a span of seven days, which included two days devoted to a Pre-Conference Seminar, there were 10 educational seminars and workshops on current industry developments in addition to 20 MCAA committee meetings and regional vice-presidents conferences, an Executive Board meeting, an Associate Membership meeting, the Masonry Industry Showcase, and the MCAA Trade Show.
In all, 35 speakers from the masonry industry and the fields of law and education addressed the conferees who had assembled from 37 states and five Canadian provinces.
The well-attended Pre-Conference Seminar featured two topics presented simultaneously-"Basic Masonry Estimating." a two-day session with construction consultant Jerry Pope of Greeley, Colo. as the lecturer, and "Panelization/Stone and Brick/Fabrication, Erection and Related Details."
Participating in the day-long discussions on "Panelization" were Jack J. Bailey of Bailey Masonry. Westminster, Colo.; J. Gregg Borchelt, Houston/Galveston Masonry Institute, Houston, Tex.; Robert Lee Crownover, Cold Springs Granite Co., Marble Falls, Tex.: James D. DeLoach. Continental Marble & Granite Co., Gretna, La.; Eugene George, G & A Masonry, Kitchener, Ont., Canada; George Hanson, Colorado Masonry Institute; Buck Richardson. Dee Brown Masonry, Inc., Austin, Tex., and William Vetovitz, Vetovitz Bros., Inc., Brunswick, Ohio.
Saturday, February 15, was devoted entirely to nuts-and-bolts sessions by the backbone groups of the Association the working committees and regional vice presidents.
