Robert Hatch concentrated on various types of wall veneers and anchor systems being constructed on the West Coast. He took a positive approach and said the metal stud system could work if properly designed. He said the system should not be shunned by the masonry industry, but rather should be viewed as a challenge to come up with innovative designs and quality workmanship. "The system must be approached in the right manner, and you can have success with it," he said.
Alan Yorkdale reiterated this thinking. He said that BIA: 1) is not against the metal stud system, and 2) its main purpose is to develop a system that will perform so the mason contractor does not have call-backs.
(BIA's official research findings are contained in its Technical Notes 28B Revised, "Brick Veneer-Panel and Curtain Walls," released in February, 1980, and published in the October, 1980 issue of Masonry.) Yorkdale said he did not believe the metal stud system to be bad per se, and listed some of the things necessary to make this a workable wall system:
1-Good metal ties.
2-Good detailing (weep holes, flashing, expansion joints).
3-Good workmanship.
4-Proper selection of materials.
