IMI Develops Computer Programs
for Masonry Building Designers
The International Masonry Institute's Market Development Program is creating computer programs to aid in designing masonry structures. The programs will feature masonry wall and loadbearing design, in addition to passive solar analysis. Targeted to small and medium-sized architectural, design and engineering firms, the design aids will make it easier, cheaper and more efficient to specify masonry for buildings and building components.
In cooperation with Jesse Schwartz of Schwartz and Senes, consulting engineers. Upper Saddle River. N.J., IMI is initially developing computer programs (software) in areas including the design of masonry walls, bond beams and masonry lintels. IMI will be working with a commercial computer firm to produce the software in the form of computer "chips" to be marketed in the U.S. and Canada through advertising, publicity and support from local/regional masonry institutes.
There are many possibilities for programs as IMI's computer activities develop. For example, in preliminary work on a masonry loadbearing building, an engineer could use an IMI-produced program to more quickly formulate a load analysis; in the area of passive solar, an architect might use IMI software to determine the required size of a heat reservoir based on boundary conditions.
"Computers have entered nearly every aspect of modern life and business, and the building industry is no exception," said Robert Beiner, IMI's director of engineering. "Our research indicates an especially strong potential market for our computer programs in small and medium-sized firms. By making designing with masonry easier through computer design aids, the Market Development Program will encourage a greater use of masonry by building specifiers."
SLUMPSTONE MASONRY
SLUMPSTONE MASONRY is the dominant building material on the new Chino (Calif.) branch office of Southwest Savings & Loan Association. The 4,000 sq. ft. facility also features bright colored ceramic tile facing at the vault, rough-sawn stained wood beams, mission roof tile, and earth-toned fixtures, furnishings and decor. The architect for the project was Albert L. DeGuglielmo Architect AIA, Inc., Irvine, Calif.
