"External extortion" is one of the most traumatic situations a business owner or security director will ever confront. In the most common variation, extortionists will threaten to explode a bomb unless they're paid off. They may use an act or demonstration to prove they mean business.

If you don't believe something like this could happen to your business, remember that Harvey's Casino in Nevada suffered $3 million worth of damage when bomb experts tried to disarm an explosive device planted by extortionists.

How should you deal with an extortion attempt? As soon as you receive a demand, contact law enforcement officials and they will provide technicians to deal with the explosives. The police or FBI will probably suggest that you follow the extortionists' demands exactly and will usually tag or set up surveillance of the money. Use every possible security precaution to stop the extortionists or limit potential damage. Harvey's reduced its losses by placing sandbags around the bomb and evacuating the hotel.- Commercial Insurance Service Inc. Newsletter, Charleston, W. Va.
