of IMI into four program boards, and the labor disputes settlement plan. Carlisle closed by stressing the continuing need for "cooperation, not confrontation."

The next speaker, John R. Mock, a leading proponent of loadbearing masonry design, gave a slide presentation on multi-storied loadbearing concrete masonry structures that his firm, Hendrick & Mock Architects, has designed in recent years. Two of these buildings are the Town & Country's West Highrise and the Hanalei Hotel Tower, situated nearby. (The Hanalei addition was featured on the cover of Masonry after it opened in 1966.)

The other structures include the Kahana Beach Condominium Resort Hotel in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, the U.S. Navy Barracks in Coronado, Calif., the Atlas Galleria Hotel in Newport Beach, Calif., and the Hilton Hotel and Santa Fe Towers in San Diego.

"The one never-ending requirement for the use of masonry in medium to highrise applications has less to do with technical knowledge, construction methods, availability of materials or comparative costs themselves than with the promotion of this information to general contractors, developers, architects, engineers and educators," Mock told the MCAA members.

"Waiting for these people to come to you as mason contractors for your ideas on the subject just does not do it. The password in real estate always has been location, location, location. The password in loadbearing masonry should become promotion, promotion, promotion."

Mock listed the following advantages in loadbearing masonry systems:
* Quality control.
* Speed and economy of construction.
* High efficiency through repetitious construction and steady work.
