Economics of masonry construction, especially with the load-bearing system, was discussed. No other building material, he said, will provide the multiple functions of beauty, fireproof qualities, creative capabilities, long life, minimal maintenance, energy efficiency, sound control and low insurance rates.
John Tawresey, a consulting engineer, discussed the structural aspects of masonry and said this aspect has been "vastly underrated." The potential, he said, is now being recognized.
He backed up his comments with slides on reinforced masonry thin-wall construction. "Reinforced masonry costs less than reinforced concrete and tilt-up systems plus allowing greater design flexibility, such as curved walls," he said. "These are exciting times for masonry, with more exciting times to come."
Dan Murray and Robert Schuerman, both mason contractors, showed slides of the versatility of masonry design and of recent projects completed with concrete block applications.
Conference Activities
MCAA Committee meetings and an Executive Board meeting occupied the morning of March 9, the first day of Conference activities. The annual President's Reception and official opening of the '85 MCAA Educational Trade Show took place that afternoon.
At the Board Meeting, Jerry Dufour formally announced his resignation as MCAA vice president to join Associated Construction Consultants, Inc., a construction management firm based in Brookfield, Wis. The Board accepted his resignation "with regret" and thanked him for his many years of loyal and dedicated service to the Association.
The Board voted to replace Dufour with Dee Brown, who had been serving as secretary of the Association. Robert Hatch, treasurer, assumes the dual role of secretary/ treasurer.
Sunday, March 10th, was a special day because of two outstanding events: the Material Handling Showcase and the evening's entertainment at the Hilton's "Bal du Moulin Rouge," a topflight variety show featuring the talented Suzanne Somers.
