'86 MCAA CONFERENCE REPORT
St. Petersburg Beach, Florida, February 27-March 4, 1986
CAA's 36th Educational Conference in '86 was strictly business-from beginning to end. With the emphasis centered entirely on education, members had the opportunity to attend any or all of 15 different seminars and workshops that were presented over the six-day span at the TradeWinds Hotel in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida, February 27-March 4. Add to that two Executive Board meetings, the Annual Meeting of the membership and five committee meetings, and the total would rival that of any master's program at a university.
Heavy Pre-Conference Program
The Conference itself was preceded by two and a half days of seminars beginning on Thursday, February 27. These included a course on "Masonry Estimating For A Profit" by well-known construction consultant Jerry Pope of Greeley, Colo.; a day-long session on "Brick Panels-A System that Really Works" by Lenny Pardue of L.C. Pardue Masonry, Inc., Portland, Ore., and a four-part session on "Effective Marketing for Today's Mason Contractor." The latter was moderated by Richard Felice and James Cope, co-chairmen of the MCAA Masonry Systems Marketing Committee which developed the program. All three of these programs played to capacity audiences.
Jerry Pope's presentation was based on the newly released 3rd edition of the manual. "Masonry Estimating For A Profit." which he authored. One of the most extensive manuals on masonry estimating available, the book was produced and published by MCAA (see advertisement elsewhere in this issue).
The manual has been revised and updated with entirely new sections on computer usage in construction, masonry panel systems and masonry systems marketing. Eight other sections comprise the balance of the book.
Lenny Pardue's presentation on brick panel systems drew an SRO attendance. He outlined various panel projects completed by his firm and showed slides of the various stages of construction. The Pardue organization is credited with being one of the premier masonry panel contractors in the Pacific Northwest. Pardue builds the panels under factory-controlled conditions off-site and delivers them to the job for installation.
At the seminar, Pardue distributed copies of his company's newest marketing aid-a beautifully illustrated, full-color sales manual that graphically portrays some of the more notable masonry projects in which his company has been involved. The manual also contains specifications and details with information on estimating, engineering.
