Masonry Veneer Manual
The Masonry Institute of America has just published a new manual on "Masonry Veneer." This publication is in accordance with the proposed requirements of the forthcoming 1988 Uniform Building Code for adhered veneer, anchored veneer and marble slab veneer. Included in the manual are both design details for the installing and specifications for veneer. The manual is authored by James E. Amrhein, S.E., Executive Director of the Masonry Institute of America.
The manual may be secured from MIA, 2550 Beverely Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90057, at a cost of $4.00. Quantity prices available upon request.
Fire Protection Report
The Concrete and Masonry Industry Firesafety Committee has issued its latest fire protection planning report, "A Comparison of Insurance and Construction Costs for Low-Rise Multi-family Dwellings."
The 8-page report analyzes the cost considerations of low-rise multifamily housing over the life of a building. Examples compare a concrete and masonry building with a wood-frame building on the basis of construction, insurance, sprinkler and mortgage costs.
The report concludes that insurance premiums by far have the greatest influence on total, long-term costs. Over the life of a building, insurance savings with fire-resistant concrete and masonry construction offset additional construction, sprinkler and finance costs many times over.

CSI Makes Four New Monographs Available
Monographs are documents which deal in depth with particular construction products, systems, or technology. They can serve as a background resource or as a technical guide.
The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) has added four such documents to its library. They cover exterior-masonry restorative cleaning, cultured marble, elevators, and exterior insulation and finish systems.
The Monograph, Exterior-Masonry Restorative Cleaning, examines various masonry substrates to be cleaned. Included in this examination are the advantages and disadvantages of the different cleaning materials and methods currently available in the marketplace. Restorative cleaning first became a professional discipline in the 1960s, when research began to reveal the degenerative effects of dirt on buildings. This monograph explains why restorative cleaning is beneficial if not imperative for older buildings.
Cultured Marble reviews the cultured marble and cultured onyx manufacturing processes. The Monograph gives a limited introduction to mold design and manufacturing. With the emphasis on the modern bathroom-as-oasis, this monograph offers the designer much information on a material possessing wide variety of color, structural integrity, ease of installation, easy maintenance, and excellent durability.
Two other Monographs cover Elevators and Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems.
To obtain these documents, contact the Order Desk, CSI, 601 Madison Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 or call (703) 684-0300.
It is often easier to fight for principles than to live up to them.
