ASC Challenges OSHA Hazard Communications Standards

In a special meeting of its Board of Trustees in Washington, the Associated Specialty Contractors (ASC) announced its intention to become a co-plaintiff in a lawsuit designed to overturn a lower court ruling on development and implementation of an Occupational Safety and Health Administration Hazard Communications Standard for the construction industry. The group pledged at least $10,000 toward financial support for the legal action.

"We feel the court ruling forces OSHA to issue a standard unsuited to the special condition of the construction industry," according to ASC President Dan Walter. "The only way to achieve an appropriate standard is to overturn the court action and allow OSHA the time to fashion an appropriate standard."

ASC representatives also applauded the recent ruling by the Office of Management and Budget which requires OSHA to greatly reduce paperwork requirements for its construction industry Hazard Communications requirements.

The ASC is an umbrella group of the eight largest and strongest construction industry specialty contracting trade organizations, representing the interests of over 165,000 contracting firms and employing over 1.5 million construction workers. The eight groups that make up the Associated Specialty Contractors include the Mason Contractors Association of America.
