Kirkland Hall, Vanderbilt University renovation was handled by Street and Street Architects with Wasco being the mason contractor. It was necessary to locate some 80,000 vintage brick to replace those damaged by an earlier fire. The project's special masonry features include the great terra cotta parapet of the 1875 building and capping for the Italianate tower, the ornate stone trim and large expanses of solid brick walls, all of which had to be removed, stabilized, flashed and replaced. The judges said: "Imaginative use of masonry interiors transformed this historically significant structure into a functional, warm and exciting space."
Methodist Hospital/Central, Memphis, which was designed by Stone, Marraccini and Patterson with Everett W. Cook & Sons, Inc. the mason contractor. Judges said the "design of this structure has very successfully integrated a major new structure with adjacent buildings by expressing the vertical brick columns and introducing brick accent horizontal expression lines. This is an extremely well articulated building that showcases the possibilities of a brick facade in a very difficult project type and setting. The project displays a very appropriate design composition with emphasis on scale, rhythm, and balance."
Interior/Nashville Convention Center by Yearwood Johnson Stanton & Crabtree, Inc. Mcintosh-Murphy Company, Inc. were the mason contractors with Parent Company the general. One of the major identifying construction features of the center is the use of split rib concrete masonry block, which serves the dual purpose of providing interior wall finish and base wall construction at the same time. In all, 77,000 fluted units and 243,000 regular concrete masonry units were used inside the 450,000 square-foot convention bility. Judges comments: "truly outstanding use of masonry products for beauty and cost control. The masonry used in this structure speaks most eloquently for itself."
