must complete 1,600 hours on the worksite alongside fellow workers. The apprentices must track and sign off their hours of work and performance objectives in their progress records.
During the second and third year within the industry, the apprentice must also complete a minimum of three specialty modules. Specialty modules include stone, restoration, chimneys and fireplaces, refractories, arches, decorative bonds and prefabricated panels. The mastering of several specialties, and in continuing their skills development over the duration of their career, ensures their transferability into jobs where greater challenges and abilities are required.

It's All In the Baker Family
THE BAKERS OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, may boast of holding a record in their area. Five generations of the family have carried cards in Columbus, Ohio Local 55. Three generations are still living, including Cher Baker, sons Kurt and Jeff and granddaughter Celeste (who works for her dad, Kurt). Jeff Baker, Cher's youngest son, has taken over the business. Although he's not a bricklayer, he graduated with a major in building construction. Pictured above are currently active members of the family: Kurt, Celestina (just turned 21 last summer), Chet and Jeff (president of Cher Baker and Company).
