COVER

BELL COMMUNITY Center manages to fit a public center onto a park setting, which is often times a difficult task. The designer must decide whether to make the building that appears a part of nature, or almost ignore the site. Wolff/Lang/Christopher Architects did neither. Instead the architects created a building that acknowledges its setting, yet maintains its own identity. They preserved the park, reinforcing its positive element in the community center program. A courtyard establishes the major public entrance. Where the courtyard meets the park, an entry tower serves to collect pedestrian park traffic, then a colonnade directs circulation into the new community center. A large, multipurpose room is visually linked to the courtyard, reinforcing the building's connection to its park setting. A skylit lobby terminates the highly visible circulation spine and entry elements, and introduces the repetitive, dominating forms of the structure. On the cover is a fine example of the split-faced concrete and vertically-scored block masonry used. Photo complements of National Concrete Masonry Association.
