MARQUETTE ALUMNI Memorial Union (AMU), located in the middle of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is used as the student commons. Designed by Opus Architects & Engineers, the AMU includes a stone rotunda that connects a student services floor (upper floor) with a student activities floor (lower floor). Both floors have the appearance of entering on ground-level, and ample use of large polished carnelian granite can be noted on the west entrance. This building was a "mason's dream" as far as W.C. Dentinger of Bill Dentinger Incorporated, Mason Contractor of the AMU project, was concerned. The architect used conventional brick, block, and stone in a very interesting, non-traditional way. Supplying most of the masonry, Tews Company is also located in Milwaukee. Included in the AMU design are brick covered walkways connecting the commons with an auditorium, courtyards and various wings. The auditorium like the AMU is made mostly of masonry including brick and block. Because Marquette is an urban university, the size and complexity is surprising, including the limited number of parallel walls used in the design.
