Policy; Best of Show Leonard
Masonry and Skidmore, Owens and Merrill (psychology building) and Hartman Cox (law school) for the Washington University Law School and Psychology Building. Close to 75 architects and contractors from all around the country were present to celebrate the winning entries.
That same evening the MCAA formal dinner provided a new level of entertainment as outgoing President Don Grant was roasted by his peers and wife. Marlene Grant was the hit of the show as she affectionately sang and danced the praises of her husband's retirement from active duty with the association. As dinner concluded the crowd gathered in a Speakeasy with palm readers and character artists. An evening no one wanted to end.
The convention ended on Sunday, February 22 with the third day of exhibits. Next year in Orlando, the show will reduce from 3 days of exhibit hours to 2 days, maintaining the same 13 hours of exhibit time.
Mighty's Assistance Aids VICA & Fastest Trowel
During the Masonry EXPO recently held in Charlotte, a highly successful Vocational Industrial Club of America (VICA) masonry contest and Fastest Trowel on the Block Competition were held. These competitions have become a highlight of the EXPO. A great deal of the success and thanks go to Mighty Equipment for coming to the aid of the event.
Hours before competition began, the event organizers discovered the gas powered mortar mixer, vital to both events, would not be allowed in the Charlotte Convention Center. Frazzled organizers, learning that Mighty Equipment would be exhibiting a Model 150 Hydraulic Electric Powered Mixer in their exhibit booth, appealed to Mighty President Bill Gambel to let the equipment be pulled out of their display and be used for both VICA and the Fastest Trowel. At a detriment to his booth display, Gambel agreed to pull the electric mixer. Consequently, both VICA and the Fastest Trowel went on without a hitch. Over one hundred twenty VICA contestants competed in a two-day program while twelve teams competed for a $5,000 prize. Thousands of EXPO attendees enjoyed the two days of displays.
We wish to thank Mighty Equipment for the display of volunteer and kindness for aiding in the success of Masonry EXPO and its demonstrations. Without their help, the contests would not have been possible.
