Arizona's Fastest Trowels

The Arizona Masonry Guild and the Arizona Masonry Contractors Association concluded October as Masonry Industry Month with "The Fastest Trowel On The Block" competition, Saturday, October 24th.

Winners of 1998 Fastest Trowel Competition/Arizona. Left to right: Mike Canez MI, Generation Masonry, 1st Place Jeff Gobel, Sutter Masonry, 2nd Place Pete Chavez, Rivera Masonry, 3rd Place

The competition pitted professional masons against each other to determine the fastest block and brick layer in Arizona. Mike Canez III from Generation Masonry in Phoenix, won the event, laying 121 blocks in the 20 minutes allowed. For the second year in a row, Jeff Gobel of Sutter Masonry finished second and third place honors went to Pete Chavez of Rivera Masonry. Nearly 20 masons participated in the event, which draw a crowd of over 1,000 people.

Speed wasn't the only factor according to Clem Hellmann, president of the Arizona Masonry Guild and owner of Quality Block Company, Inc., the company which hosted the annual event. Quality was as important. Criteria included height block plumb, level, mortar joint quality and overall workmanship. As this year's winner, Canez took home a check of $1,500.00 to go along with his title.

As the state's winner, Canez will be sponsored by the Arizona Masonry Contractors Association to compete in the national competition slated for February 22nd in Orlando, Florida. In last year's nationals, Arizona captured both first and second place.

Established in 1958, the Guild is celebrating its 40 years of service to Arizona families. The Guild has played a significant role in economic development, new product and construction standards, enhanced safety policies and increased energy efficiency of masonry products.

It has also been on the forefront of developing and implementing statewide consumer education campaigns and scholarship programs. For more information about the Guild, its members and programs, call 602/265-5999 in Phoenix, or visit their website at www.azmasonryguild.org.
