# Illinois Indiana Masonry Council Presents Awards
Soka Gakkai International-Chicago Culture Center, Chicago, IL
The Illinois Indiana Masonry Council presented twelve awards to fourteen architectural firms, ten Mason Contractors and Job Foremen, for their outstanding projects at the 24th EXCELLENCE IN MASONRY Architectural Awards Banquet, held Saturday evening, May 8, 1999 at the Wyndham Hotel in Itasca, Illinois. Over 635 people were in attendance to honor the architectural entrants at the 24th Awards Banquet.
TWO GOLD MEDAL AWARDS
Deborah Doyle, AIA, Past President of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, presented two Gold Medal Awards. The first went to Harding Associates, Architect for Soka Gakkai International-USA, Chicago Culture Center, Chicago, Illinois: Mason Contractor, Caesar Fiocchi Co. and Job Foreman Dennis Manfredini.
The second Gold Medal Award was given to the Architectural firm of Larson & Derby, Inc. for the DeKalb County Center for Agriculture, Sycamore, Illinois.
THREE SILVER MEDAL AWARDS
Dick Lauber, President of the Mason Contractors Association of Greater Chicago and Ken Lambert, President of Illinois District Council #1 and International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Local #21, Chicago, presented the Silver Medal Awards. Larson & Condon Architecture & Interior Design won an award for St. Joseph's College-Core Education Building, Rensselaer, Indiana. The Mason Contractor was F. A. Wilhelm Construction Co., and the Job Foreman was Mike Wilhelm.
The second Silver Medal Award was given Legat Architects for Fremont Elementary School, Fremont, Illinois.
The Third silver Medal Award was earned by DLK Architecture, Inc. for the J.L. Kellogg School of Management, Wieboldt Hall, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Mason Contractor Pepper Construction Co., and Job Foreman, Stanley Bucholc.
# Kentuckiana Masonry Institute Presents Awards
De Kalb County Center for Agriculture, Sycamore, IL
The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute's Annual Architectural Awards Luncheon was held on April 23, 1999 at the Georgetown College Conference & Training Center in Georgetown, Kentucky. The program was developed to recognize excellence in architectural design. Awards were presented to the architect, structural engineer, mason contractor and owner in each of four categories: the "M" Honor Award for Overall Excellence in Masonry Design, the Merit Award for Best Use of Brick and Clay Products, the Merit Award for Best Use of Concrete Masonry and the Merit Award for Best Use of Masonry in Special Projects.
The "M" Honor Award was presented to Kallman, McKinnell & Wood Architects, Inc., Boston, MA for their design of the William T. Young Library, University of Kentucky, Lexington. The Structural Engineer was Zaldastani Associates, and the Mason Contractor was Huskisson Masonry, Inc.
The Merit Award for Best Use of Brick and Clay Products for their design of the University of Kentucky Parking Structure #5, Lexington went to Sherrnan-Carter Barnhart Architects. Walker Parking was the Structural Engineer for this project, and Huskisson Masonry, Inc. was the Mason Contractor.
Omni Architects was awarded the Merit Award for Best Use of Concrete Masonry. The award winning project was the Eagle Creek Branch Library, Lexington, KY. The Structural Engineer was Buell, Fryer & McReynolds, Inc., and the Mason Contractor was Huston Barger.
The Merit Award for Best Use of Masonry in Special Projects went to Nolan & Nolan, Inc. for their design of the Natural Bride State Resort Park Pool Replacement, Slade, KY. The Structural Engineer was also Nolan & Nolan, Inc., and the Mason Contractors were Crossroads Masonry and Bobby Cameron Masonry.
# Alabama Masonry Institute's Top Block Award
The Top Block award recognizes owners, architects, builders, and masonry contractors for their involvement in select projects in Alabama which utilize masonry construction. The Church at Brook Hills recently received this award. The Church was selected and recognized by Alabama Masonry Institute (AMI) for its unique design and efficient use of concrete block.
Winners of the award gathered at a luncheon May 21st at the Marriott Hotel on Grandview Parkway. John Heming, Pastor of Administration at The Church at Brook Hills, was honored along with Brian Bamett of Garrison Barrett, the architect, Bill Kreis of Brice Building Company, the general contractor; Grady Gunn of Superock, the block producer; and Creig Steinfield of Masonry Arts, the masonry contractor. John Sorrell with AMI presented awards and framed photographs of the church to all the honorees.
