DUST-FREE TUCK-POINTING

Denny Miller of Omni Block (3rd from left) and Joan Borter, Arizona Masonry Guild (3rd from right) are joined by Tucson volunteers to build the first masonry Habitat for Humanity/Tucson home on September 16.

Masonry products are also durable and appropriate for the desert climate and assist in creating a safe indoor air environment. She concluded by saying the Guild and its members are thrilled and proud to assist Habitat/Tucson in providing affordable housing for low-income families in the Tucson area.

Chilton added that Habitat Tucson is also interested in masonry products because they provide greater value than traditional building methods. Masonry is energy efficient, termite and fire proof and virtually requires no maintenance when left in its natural state. This will make a Habitat home less expensive to own and operate for its inhabitants.

Habitat For Humanity Tucson is dedicated to eliminating poverty housing in the greater Tucson area. Founded in 1980, Habitat Tucson has built 150 homes. According to Chilton, the lack of affordable housing is reaching crisis proportions in Pima County. Arizona's average income ranks as one of the lowest in the country, yet the population is one of the fastest growing. Over 34,000 Tucson families spend more than 50% of their income on a place to live, and often live in substandard housing. The masonry homes built by Habitat in Tucson will be 1,200 square feet, three bedrooms, two bathrooms complete with heat pumps. Each house meets or exceeds county and city building codes.

made on the sub-contract document review process. The latest provisions have been fully discussed by the Subcommittee tasked to review the documents and it now seems very possible that a draft will be ready for adoption at the CCA Annual Conference in March. The new payment provisions require the contractor to put the owner on notice that work will be stopped if payment is not made by the due date in order to postpone the obligation to pay the subcontractor.

The Council approved the latest version of the CCDC Statutory Declaration Forms CCDC 9 A&B. These were subsequently approved by the CCA Board. The new forms require the declarant to swear the he/she has paid all accounts up to the latest progress payment received except for payment deferred by agreement or amounts withheld by reason of legitimate dispute. These changes will greatly facilitate the use of these forms.
