The Trowel Trades Program at the Career Technology Center currently has 31 students in its masonry program. This three-year program for 10th through 12th graders is mostly hands-on so the students can gain practical experience according to instructor Joseph Pinto. The students and the instructor have worked on two projects this year. The first is a fireplace that is used for their Christmas party. The second is a 26' x 40' maintenance garage for the school. The students poured the foundation and also laid block. This spring, they plan to complete the outside with stucco.

Somerset, Pennsylvania

Masonry students at SCTC have done several projects for Habitat for Humanity including foundations and porches. Student masons have also done work for the local Blind Association, participating school districts, churches and other local organizations. During the last semester, 85% of SCTC masonry seniors were employed through the co-op program.

Trade theory and estimating are also covered. Students gain experience by building projects both onsite where they host an open house for the public to view their projects and off campus projects. Live outside work has included dugouts, concessions stands, storage buildings, concrete pads and sidewalks.
