NFPA VS. IBC VS. MASONRY INDUSTRY
The goal of unifying the country's building codes is but a myth now. The bigger question remains, "Which is better for the masonry industry?" There really is no clear answer to that question. In some respects, the NFPA Code is better because it references the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) Code, which is the masonry industry's consensus structural document. This is a goal that the Masonry Alliance for Codes and Standards (MACS) has been working toward in the IBC for years. However, the NFPA strongly supports active fire resistance rather than passive fire resistance. That means that their code provisions lean more toward fire sprinklers and other fire safety devices that must be "activated" rather than the passive fire resistance of a material such as concrete and masonry. "The NFPA's fire safety provisions are quite a bit more lenient than those of the IBC," said Chip Clark, the Chairman of MACS and the National Concrete Masonry Association's new Director of Codes and Standards. "The concrete and masonry industries support passive fire resistance to take advantage of our materials' inherent fire resistant properties."
