Topics Covered During Seminar
Discover current Standards and Codes relating to masonry materials. This session will deal with how the ACI 530 Masonry Code and ASTM material Standards impact your projects [ASTM C 216, ASTM C 90, ASTM C270 and ACI 530].
Proper test methods relating to masonry materials. Understand the proper methods used to qualify your masonry materials used in the field and avoid unnecessary material rejection [ASTM C 1019, ASTM C1314, ASTM C 780, ASTM C 140 and ASTM C 67].
Laboratory Standards. Evaluate and understand if your lab is qualified and understand how to test masonry materials [ASTM C 1093]. This is critical to have successful tests.
Masonry Material Submittals. This session will assist you in understanding the materials and project submittals.
Mortar Testing. Hands-on testing of Mortar in both field and lab applications. Samples will be produced i.e. mortar cubes, air content and water retention) [ASTM 270, ASTM 780].
Grout Testing. Hands-on testing of grout both in field and lab applications (i.e. pinwheel prisms) [ASTM 1019).
Unit Testing (CMU and Brick). CMU and Brick Testing: Demonstration of proper testing techniques for these materials. Prism tests will be covered in this section [ASTM C 67, ASTM C 1072, ASTM C 1314].

3:45pm-4:15pm: Grout Testing
4:15pm-5:00pm: Unit Testing (CMU and Brick)

About the Presenter
Bob Nelson is President of Robert L. Nelson & Associates, Inc., a commercial testing laboratory specializing in masonry construction and masonry projects. He has forty-five years of experience in the quality control and quality assurance of major construction and research projects and experience in all types of product testing, research and evaluation for the construction industry.
Currently, he serves as chairman of the ASTM joint committee C12.07/C15.07 Laboratory Accreditation/Evaluation and as a member of the executive committee C12 on Mortar. He is the recipient of the ASTM 2001 Award of Merit and is an appointed member of the current Masonry Standards Joint Committee which develops the ACI 530 Code and Specifications. He is also past vice-president of The Masonry Society and past chairman of ASTM committee C7 on Lime.
